In 1922 he became an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of N.S.W. painting portraits, landscapes and still life. He served inthe Military History section of the AIF during World War 2,1943-1945.
Awards.
Archibald prize, 1934 ; Sulman prize, 1936.

Note from Gary Baker:
I attended life drawing classes given by Henry Hanke at the Royal Art Society for many years. This class had a nude model in the same pose for 3 hours with 3 sittings, giving a total of 9 hours for the one pose. The most memorable quote Harry told me was "I am teaching you how to see, not how to paint"....this is very true, as the ability to draw or paint the human figure in detail is an artists greatest challenge to learn...
